10 questions to ask before you reserve a puppy

The questions that separate a responsible breeder from the rest, and the answers you should expect to hear.
A good breeder will be glad you asked. These questions help you understand how a puppy was raised, and whether the breeder will be there for you later.
About the parents
- Can I see the mother? You should be able to see her with the puppies, in person or in recent photos and videos.
- Which health tests have the parents had? Ask for the results, not just a yes.
- How old is the mother, and how many litters has she had? Responsible breeders give their girls time to rest and retire them early.
About the puppy
- What vet care has the puppy had? Expect a vet check, first vaccinations, deworming and a microchip, all written down.
- How are the puppies raised? In the home, handled every day and used to normal household sounds is what you want to hear.
- What is this puppy's personality like? A breeder who knows each puppy can help you choose the right match.
About the sale
- Is there a written contract and health guarantee? Read it before you pay a deposit.
- How does the deposit work? Know whether it is refundable or transferable, and when the balance is due.
- How will my puppy come home? Ask about pickup, delivery options and costs in advance.
About afterwards
- What happens if I ever cannot keep my dog? A responsible breeder will always help, and will often take the dog back.
A breeder should ask you questions too
Expect to be asked about your home, your schedule and your experience with dogs. It shows the breeder cares where their puppies go.
